Nutrition and Nutritive Soul in Aristotle and Aristotelianism

This volume, edited by Giouli Koribili and Roberto Lo Presti, is, in part, the result of a symposium entitled ‘Nutrition and Nutritive Soul in Aristotle and Aristotelianism’, held at the Humboldt University, Berlin, from the 22nd to the 24th of March 2017. In their introduction the editors of the volume state that the primary aim of the work they have brought together has been to examine the fundamental problems raised by the fact that Aristotle chose to place under the soul he calls ‘nutritive’ a wide variety of physical manifestations shared by all living things: growth, nutrition, respiration, reproduction, heating and cooling, sleep and wakefulness. The aim of all the contributions in this volume is therefore to highlight the neglected multidimensionality of the ‘lowest’ part of the soul in Aristotle and the Aristotelian tradition. The volume is divided into two equal sections of eight articles each, one devoted to Aristotle and the other to the history of Aristotelianism.

Ce volume, édité par Giouli Koribili et Roberto Lo Presti, est, en partie, issu d’un colloque intitulé « Nutrition and Nutritive Soul in Aristotle and Aristotelianism », qui s’est tenu à l’Université Humboldt, à Berlin, du 22 au 24 mars 2017. Les éditeurs du volume, dans leur introduction, précisent que les travaux qu’ils ont rassemblés ont eu comme objectif premier d’examiner les problèmes fondamentaux soulevés par le fait qu’Aristote a choisi de placer sous l’égide de l’âme qu’il appelle « nutritive » une grande variété de manifestations physiques partagées par tous les êtres vivants : la croissance, la nutrition, la respiration, la reproduction, le réchauffement et le refroidissement, le sommeil et l’éveil. Le but poursuivi par l’ensemble des contributions réunies dans ce volume est par conséquent de mettre en évidence la multidimensionnalité négligée de la partie la plus « basse » de l’âme, chez Aristote et dans la tradition aristotélicienne. L’ensemble se divise en effet en deux sections égales de huit articles chacune, l’une consacrée à Aristote, et l’autre à l’histoire de l’aristotélisme.
