Mastroianni reviews what we know about the history and disputed location of the Latin colony Hadria on the Adriatic coast. Taking into account geological and hydrological data as well as sporadic underwater explorations conducted between 1982 and 2011, the author argues that the modern Cerrano water course is the only candidate that fits the river ‘Matrinum’ or ‘Macrinum’ which Strabo named as the site of the port of Hadria. This identification is further supported by evidence from the Tabula Peutingeriana (11th-13th century) and also the names of a monastery and hill in the vicinity.
