Résumé

Anglais

On the basis of the latest excavations conducted between 2004 and 2014, the authors report that the fourth century AD basilica on the site reveals two stages of construction, the second presenting reinforcement of walls in some areas and resurfacing of mosaic pavements. There is a reasonable amount of literary evidence for intense seismic activity in the fourth century AD, and the archaeological record here is consistent with this evidence. At Southern Baths on site there are strong indications of damage caused by seismic activity in phase III of the construction in the mid-fifth century, even though there are no literary or documentary references to seismic activity in Sicily itself in this period.
