While excavations at Peltuinum (Navelli valley, L’Aquila) are still in progress, Migliorati reports that the intense building phase in the time of Claudius was related to the effort to reduce the water level in the Fucino lake and also to an earthquake (possibly the event of AD 51 known from Rome). Damage in a later period may be related to an earthquake in southern Samnium in AD 346. This led to despoliation of material from the site and the construction of churches/castles. The seismic damage visible in the western wall fortifications of city is most likely linked to seismic activity in mid-fifth century.
