Garofalo reviews the stages in the conflict between Cicero and Clodius culminating in the events of 56 BC where Clodius as aedile exploited various prodigies (including an unexplained noise reported in the ager Latiniensis which sounded like the clamour of armed men) to claim that the gods were angered by Cicero’s impiety. Garofalo goes on to argue that it was likely that the noise was only accompanied by a tremor too faint to be registered by the human senses (a comparable event occurred near Capena in 2020) and then to discuss candidates for the precise location of the occurrence (just to the north of Ancient Rome or possibly the Alban Hills).
