Starting from the 102nd item on Philastrius’ list of heresies, Rota reviews a selection of key texts (John the Lydian’s De ostentis, Michael Psellos’ De omnifaria doctrina and Opusculum 26, the Anonymous 17th century Brevo Discorso delli Terremoti) in an effort to trace attempts to integrate scientific (and pagan) explanations by authors living under Christian authorities. Even where authors found the ancient scientific typologies of earthquakes and their causes useful, they still maintained that God was ultimately responsible, preserving the fundamental position exemplified by Philastrius.
