Drawing on approaches to myth established in the 1970s, Lancini selects three mythical examples to illustrate the linking of geology to myth in terms of ‘geo-myth’ (Typhon), ‘geo-cult’ (the Palici of Sicily), and ‘geo-landscape’ (the Campi Flegrei). The core mythemes of the Typhon myth indicate that it cannot be separated from the phenomena of vulcanism. The mysterious Palici cult, now confirmed by archaeological excavation near Lago Naftia, developed its specific character – especially as a site for trial by ordeal – from the peculiar geological conditions of the location. The ancient explanation of the geological character of the Campi Flegrei is a good example of how Greek colonists applied myths of divine conflicts with giants, established in other areas of Greek habitation, to new terrains in order to explain their unique geology.
