The French Reception of Francis Bacon’s Natural History in the Mid Seventeenth Century

Puis elle analyse l’Histoire naturelle, ouvrage de Pierre Amboise qui se présente comme une traduction de Sylva Sylvarum et de New Atlantis. Or, en réalité, il s’agit plutôt d’une sélection d’extraits, d’une reconstruction voire d’une réécriture des textes baconiens, qui nous informe ainsi sur la réception française de cette histoire naturelle. Dana Jalobeanu studies the definition of natural history in Bacon’s work, and its reception in Mersenne and Descartes’ texts. Then, she analyses the book Histoire naturelle, written by Pierre Amboise, which pretends to be a translation of Sylva Sylvarum and New Atlantis. But in reality, it consists in a selection of abstracts, and even in a rewriting of the Baconian texts.
