Automata, these machines mimicking the spontaneity of life, render problematic the relationship between art and nature. The Cartesian thesis of the animal-machine gives them a status grounded in the identity of art and nature laws. The creations of Vaucanson illustrate the idea of a wholly mechanical representation of the living organism. Cybernetics renews this tradition with a description of automata in terms of information. This authorizes an inversion of the relationship between nature and artefacts, natural automata being used as models for designing artificial automata.
